Whether you choose to use synthetic horse brushes in bright colors or natural-bristle brushes with wooden backs, your horse brushes represent an investment. By caring for them properly, you’ll not only extend their useful life but also keep your horse’s coat at it’s very best.
Why should we clean our brushes?
To keep our horse’s coat in optimum condition we must remember to keep our tools in optimum condition. Often the cleaning of our brushes is overlooked in the hustle and bustle of everything else that needs to be done in the yard.
If your brushes are dusty and clogged with dirt, they can’t possibly effectively remove it from your horse’s coat. Cleaning the bristles will allow the brushes to work more efficiently with less effort on our part.
The more your brushes are used the more often they will require cleaning. Hair build-up and visible grime is a good indication that your brush kit is due for a clean. Less obvious is product build up and oils which will attract dust to stick to the bristles. Washing your brushes regularly will help to prevent this from occurring.

- Don’t forget to clean the storage container too if it’s necessary
How to Clean Your Brushes
Follow our simple step-by-step guide to have your brushes looking pristine & brand new again in no time!
Step One
Using cold water, rinse the bristles.

Step Two
For natural bristles, use a very small amount of silicone free shampoo or wool wash & gently massage into the bristles to remove built up oil & dirt. We recommend a gentle, silicone free shampoo to
prevent the bristles from getting damaged, dried out or covered in a build up of harsh silicone.
If your brushes are all synthetic with plastic handles, fill a bucket with warm water hot water and mix in dish washing liquid designed to lift out grease and rinse well.
Another way to sanitise your brushes to add a moderate amount of Listerine® mouthwash to the wash water— it smells nice and kills bacteria.
Step Three
Rinse the shampoo or dishwashing liquid from the brush, massaging the bristles gently to ensure that there is no residue left behind. Rinse and repeat the process until there are no soap suds left and the water is no longer discoloured. It is important to prevent buildup of soap residue.
Step Four
Dry excess water from the brush using a towel and spread out to try in a warm location where they can drain out of direct sunlight.
